Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School. I am your child’s World History teacher.
I would like to make clear my expectations, in accordance with District and State standards, for my students.
Course Objectives- According to the California State Standards
students in World History should be able
to:
·Compare the present with the past and see how
current events have historical roots;
·Research and evaluate how the past is interpreted
by historians and politicians;
·Demonstrate understanding of how change happens
over time and is affected by geography, technology, politics, and belief
systems;
·Develop a range of oral communication and
interpersonal skills, such as cooperative work, listening to others, self
expression, create and present
displays of information;
Course Expectations- Students are expected to:
· Arrive on time to class every day. If your student
is absent please send a note to school when they come back, because an unexcused
absence means that any late work will lose points. An excused absence allows
your student to get missing work and extended
deadlines.
· Complete all homework and class work on time to
the best of their ability. Late work is accepted but receives reduced
points.
· Follow directions in all activities. We will be
working in a variety ways: small groups, whole class, and independently. It is
important that everyone know what his or her role is in the class and to be
cooperative, productive, and respectful in every way to
everybody.
· Bring writing materials and textbooks to class
every day. It is important to be prepared and to keep up with all reading and
writing assignments. I am available to students who need help during periods 5
& 8. Remind your student to bring a pass from their teacher to come see me
for extra help.
Grading-
Grades are based on homework, class work, participation, tests, projects, and
presentations. Each step of the learning process is given credit, from reading
aloud in class and taking notes to final drafts of essays and completed
projects. Here is the point scale I use to determine final grades:
A = 90 - 100
B = 89 - 80
C = 79 – 70
D = 69 – 60
F = 59 – 0
